Equipment Failure at Colorado Gold Mine Leaves One Dead, Dozen Trapped
An equipment failure at a former Colorado gold mine has resulted in one fatality and left twelve others trapped, authorities revealed on Thursday.
The incident occurred at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, which now serves as a tourist attraction located near the town of Cripple Creek. The elevator malfunctioned approximately 500 feet below the surface, posing a significant risk to those inside. Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell announced the tragic death during a press conference.
Rescue Efforts in Progress
Despite the challenging circumstances, rescue crews successfully evacuated eleven individuals from the mine. However, a dozen people remain stranded at a depth of around 1,000 feet. Fortunately, Mikesell assured that they are safe and in regular communication with authorities. Efforts are currently underway to restore the elevator system and bring the remaining individuals to safety.
Mikesell mentioned that a contingency plan involving rope extraction is in place if the elevator cannot be repaired promptly.
Historical Context of the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine
The Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine has a long history, dating back to the 1800s when it was operational. Although it ceased production in the 1960s, the mine continues to offer guided tours to the public. Visitors have the opportunity to descend 100 stories underground, witness gold veins in the rock formations, and take a ride on an underground tram.
Interestingly, the last recorded incident at the mine occurred in 1986, highlighting the rarity of such emergencies.
State Support and Collaboration
Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed his commitment to aiding the rescue operation by providing state resources.
In a statement, Polis affirmed, “We will do everything possible and collaborate with the county to ensure a swift and safe resolution of the situation.”
