The incident, which took place in April 2023 at Toronto’s Pearson International airport, was perhaps the most valuable gold heist in history. Police reported more than CA$20,000,000 worth of gold was stolen in the form of 6,600 serialized bars.
Lead investigator Det. Sgt. Mike Mavity stated, “We believe a large portion has gone overseas to markets that are flush with gold.” He continued, mentioning Dubai and India as potential destinations where stolen gold could be melted down and honored despite serial numbers.
Mavity also expressed his belief that the stolen gold was quickly melted down and handed over to another party following the heist.
Suspects in the case include a jewelry store owner, a former Air Canada manager, and a warehouse employee. A total of nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
The suspects reportedly used a completed bill for a seafood pick-up to forge paperwork that was given to a warehouse attendant. Authorities recovered only CA$90,000 from the heist, with a small amount of precious metal believed to have been melted down in the basement of a Mississauga jewelry store immediately after the theft.
Police have also tried to establish connections between the stolen gold and cross-border gun trafficking, citing dozens of firearms seized from suspects in the investigation. Two fully automatic weapons and several untraceable firearms were recovered, but substantial evidence linking the stolen gold to the illegal gun trade has not been provided.
It is important to note that the case showcases not only the audacity of the heist but also the complexities involved in tracking and recovering stolen goods. Despite the arrests made, a significant portion of the stolen gold remains missing, highlighting the challenges law enforcement faces in such high-value cases.
