This column by Donnis Hueftle-Bullock originally appeared in the Oct 10, 2024 issue of the Custer County Chief.

Not like the veins of gold that were a miners’ dream in the mountains of Colorado in the mid 1850’s, Chip and I witnessed “veins of Gold” on the mountain sides as we drove through Colorado last week. Upon our first glimpse, we said to each other, “Welcome to Colorado” and the color of fall.

That would be the gold of the aspen leaves as they stood out in the pines along our drive. For some, it was a large mass and others it was a jagged line, kind of like a waterfall going down the mountains.

Enjoying the Golden Fall

As we marveled at the golden hues of the aspen leaves contrasting with the green pines, we couldn’t help but appreciate the natural beauty of Colorado in the fall. The changing colors of the foliage created a picturesque scene that welcomed us to the state.

Just like thousands flocked to the Rockies for dreams of finding the high grade mineral, now thousands enjoy the gold on the mountain sides to view in the fall, get off to the back trails and go back in time.

A Timeless Appeal

The allure of Colorado’s fall foliage draws crowds seeking a time of tranquility and natural beauty. The opportunity to escape into the mountains and witness the stunning display of gold on the slopes provides a sense of peace and nostalgia for many visitors.

When you take time off, you are ready for a change of pace, a peaceful time. At first, as we drove and experienced construction delays and traffic backed up for miles, it was “welcome to populated Colorado.”

Finding Respite in Colorado

Despite encountering the hustle and bustle of populated areas in Colorado, the chance to pause for a coffee break and take in the surroundings allows for moments of reflection and appreciation. The state’s natural beauty and welcoming atmosphere offer a respite from the demands of everyday life.

Taking a break from traffic and stopping for a coffee, I was once again reminded of “welcome in Colorado,” when I had a person, not even as tall as I, speak rudely to me as her mother watched on. Chip said, “welcome to Colorado.”

Unexpected Encounters

Amidst the challenges of travel, there are encounters with both rudeness and warmth. From encountering impoliteness to striking up conversations with friendly locals, the experiences in Colorado offer a mix of interactions that contribute to the overall charm of the state.

I am happy to say, once we arrived at our destination, conversations were struck up with shop keepers, waiters and other travelers that renewed my belief “welcome to Colorado.”

Connecting Through History

Delving into the historical aspects of Colorado, such as staying at the Hotel Colorado where Teddy Roosevelt once stayed, provides a unique opportunity to connect with the past. The rich history of the state, including the origin of the term “teddy bear,” adds layers of depth to the overall experience.

Only in a historic hotel as you walk out of your room, can you have three ladies’ approach and ask to see your historic room! We soon made friends with women from California, Georgia and Texas that were in the state for a John Denver reunion concert at Snowmass. Cara from Georgia also happened to be a photographer. We started talking about film, cameras of the past, F-stops and shutter speeds only to be called “camera geeks.” To that chance meeting I would say, “welcome to Colorado,” and welcome to my new “vein of gold” as I made a new friend in Cara.

Building Connections

Engaging with fellow travelers and sharing stories of exploration and discovery fosters connections that transcend geographical boundaries. Through chance encounters and shared interests, friendships are formed, enhancing the overall experience of visiting Colorado.

It was 35 years ago that Chip and I visited Glenwood Springs. The change was unbelievable. Just like with the gold rush in the 1850’s, obviously Colorado still holds “veins of gold” for many. I would say the gold rush has continued for the past 166+ years for the state of Colorado.

Continued Legacy of Gold

Reflecting on the enduring allure of Colorado and its historical significance, it becomes evident that the state’s “veins of gold” extend beyond physical minerals to encompass the timeless beauty and charm that continue to captivate visitors over the years. The legacy of Colorado’s natural treasures endures, leaving an indelible mark on those who venture into its majestic landscapes.
