A police department in Canada believes that more than 6,500 gold bars have vanished abroad after being stolen from an airport last year, making it possibly the most lucrative gold heist in history. The incident occurred in April 2023 at Toronto’s Pearson International airport, with over CA$20,000,000 worth of gold, in the form of 6,600 serialized bars, taken.
Investigation and Suspects
Lead investigator Det. Sgt. Mike Mavity stated at a meeting of the Peel Police Service Board that a significant portion of the stolen gold is suspected to have been moved to markets saturated with gold, such as Dubai or India, where gold with serial numbers can be melted down and still be accepted. Mavity also believes that the gold bars were likely handed over to another party and swiftly melted down right after the heist. The suspects in this case include a jewelry store owner, a former Air Canada manager, and a warehouse employee. Thus far, nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the theft.
Realization and Recovery Efforts
Authorities discovered that the suspects used falsified paperwork for a seafood pick-up to deceive a warehouse attendant. A meager amount of precious metal from the heist was melted down in the basement of a Mississauga jewelry store immediately after the theft. To date, only CA$90,000 from the stolen gold has been recuperated.
Connection to Illegal Activities
Police have tried to link the stolen gold to cross-border gun trafficking, as dozens of firearms have been confiscated from the suspects in the investigation. While two fully automatic weapons and several untraceable firearms were seized, concrete evidence tying the stolen gold to illicit gun trading is yet to be presented.
