Two Men Plead Guilty in Romance Scam Involving Cryptocurrency
Kenneth Brown Jr. and Nicholas Shepard, owners of an Irmo gold and precious metals exchange, have agreed to plead guilty in federal court in Columbia to being part of a nationwide scam involving social media romances, cryptocurrency, and misusing legitimate third-party businesses email accounts. The two men are expected to appear in court during the last week of September to formally plead guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud with a maximum sentence of 20 years and a $250,000 fine, although maximum sentences are rarely imposed.
