The Dynamic Duo at Providence
Back in the early 1970’s, the legendary Dave Gavitt was coaching at Providence and lighting struck in a big way: two local talents, two comets that shone brilliantly but briefly, joined forces at Providence and helped the Friars get to the 1973 Final Four: Marvin “Bad News” Barnes and Ernie DiGregorio.
Marvin “Bad News” Barnes
Barnes was a wildly talented 6-8 forward who could basically do anything he wanted on the court. The problem was he had a total lack of discipline off of it and later developed a drug problem.
Ernie DiGregorio
DiGregorio was a 6-0 point guard with a wonderful imagination for the game and particularly for passing. He was on his way to an epic NBA career – he actually was Rookie of the Year in 1974 – but injuries ruined his career.
At PC though the two of them were great as you’ll see here and DiGregorio hit one pass that people have never stopped talking about. He was highly, highly unusual.
The Downfall of Barnes
Barnes sadly developed a drug problem which derailed his career. At one point he was actually doing it on the bench. He died far too young in 2014.
Insight: The pairing of Marvin “Bad News” Barnes and Ernie DiGregorio at Providence showcased the immense talent and potential these two players had, but also highlighted the struggles they faced off the court that impacted their careers. Despite their individual challenges, their time together at Providence remains memorable for their on-court chemistry and contributions to the team’s success. Additionally, their contrasting paths post-college serve as a reminder of the impact of discipline and personal choices on professional sports careers.
