Mounties Warn of Fake Gold Scam Resurgence in Richmond
The Richmond RCMP is alerting the public to beware of a scam involving fake gold that has reemerged in the city. In a news release on Saturday, the Richmond RCMP disclosed that they have received four recent reports of individuals selling counterfeit gold and jewelry within their area.
Warning to Prevent Further Victimization
Cpl. Adriana O’Malley emphasized the importance of raising awareness about these types of frauds that resurface periodically in the community. By issuing a public warning, the goal is to educate people and hopefully prevent further victimization.
Two Techniques Used by Fraudsters
According to the police, the fraudsters operating in recent incidents have employed two common techniques: “verbal inducements” and sleight of hand. In the verbal inducements scenario, the fraudster manipulates the victim by appealing to their emotions or offering to sell the fake gold at a discounted price. On the other hand, in the sleight of hand technique, the suspect places the counterfeit jewelry on the victim and then swiftly removes it along with the victim’s authentic jewelry.
Additional Insight:
It is important for individuals to be cautious when approached by strangers offering to sell gold or jewelry on the street. These scammers can be very convincing, often resorting to emotional manipulation to deceive their victims. It is crucial to stay vigilant and report any suspicious incidents to the authorities promptly.
Advice from Law Enforcement
Law enforcement officials advise individuals who are approached by potential scammers to avoid going anywhere with them. Instead, it is recommended to walk away immediately and, when safe to do so, report the incident to local police. Cpl. O’Malley reiterated the old adage that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. It is crucial to refuse any offers from strangers selling gold or jewelry on the street and walk away to ensure one’s safety and avoid falling victim to these scams.
