The U.S. Olympic figure skating team finally received their gold medals more than two years after missing out due to an opponent’s doping scandal.
U.S. and Japan figure skaters gathered at Champions Park in Paris on Wednesday to receive their rightful gold and silver medals from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Russian Controversy
Back in 2022, Russia clinched the gold medal in the event, largely attributed to 15-year-old Kamila Valieva’s outstanding performance, becoming the first woman to land a quadruple jump at the Olympics.
However, Valieva’s positive test for trimetazidine at the Russian national championships in December 2021, a banned drug that treats angina, cast a shadow over their victory. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to withhold medal presentations for the team event until Valieva’s case was resolved.
Delayed Recognition
The U.S. Olympians had to endure nearly two years of uncertainty before knowing which medal they would receive, voicing their frustration about the prolonged process.
It wasn’t until January of this year that Valieva was found guilty of an anti-doping rule violation, leading to the disqualification of the ROC’s gold medal. The U.S. team was then elevated to the gold position while Japan moved up to silver.
Long-Awaited Ceremony
Although the team had to wait an additional seven months for the official medal ceremony, the moment finally arrived, allowing Madison Chock, Evan Bates, Karen Chen, Nathan Chen, Zachary Donohue, Brandon Frazier, Madison Hubbell, Alexa Knierim, and Vincent Zhou to receive their well-deserved recognition in front of a cheering crowd in Paris.
Reflecting on the experience, Chock expressed her awe at the moment, saying, “It’s almost surreal. We got our medals, and I turned around, and I saw the Eiffel Tower, and I was just blown away.”
