Seven artisanal miners tragically lost their lives when a mine shaft collapsed at the Kasweto gold mine in Lumba village, Rarieda Sub-county in Kenya on Tuesday.
The incident occurred while 11 miners were inside the shaft, and there is ongoing process to recover them.
Mr Samuel Olielo, who lost his elder brother in the accident, described it as a devastating day for the community.
Four survivors were rushed to Bondo Sub-county Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased miners were taken to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Siaya County Police Commander Kleti Kimaiyo confirmed the incident and stated that investigations were ongoing to determine the underlying cause of the collapse.
“So far, the information we have is that seven people lost their lives at the gold mine and the bodies have been taken to the mortuary for post-mortem. We will give concrete information as soon as we get the full details, our officers are on the spot on the same matter,” Kimaiyo said.
Regional mining officer Ben Bera attributed the frequent mine collapses to miners neglecting safety measures. He stressed the importance of following safety protocols and obtaining permits before mining begins.
This tragedy follows another fatal incident just two months prior, further drawing attention to ongoing safety concerns in the area.
