Overview of the Stibnite Gold Project
The Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) and the Draft Record of Decision (ROD) for the Stibnite Gold Project are open for a 45-day predecisional objection period.
Stibnite is a proposed mining operation on the Payette and Boise National Forests in Valley County, east of the community of Yellow Pine near the East Fork South Fork Salmon River.
If approved for operation, this would create one of the largest gold, silver, and antimony mines in the United States, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
Analysis and Approval Process
The FEIS analyzes the potential environmental effects of the mining operation as proposed by Perpetua Resources, Idaho, Inc. through a general plan of operations. The Draft ROD outlines the Forest Service’s decision to authorize the 2021 Modified Mine Plan and to approve a special use authorization for transmission line upgrades and installation of a new power transmission line with supporting infrastructure.
Additionally, the decision approves project-specific plan amendments to the 2003 Payette National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan and the 2010 Boise National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan as amended.
Opportunity for Objection
The objection process provides an opportunity for those who have participated in a prior formal public comment period for this project to have their unresolved concerns reviewed before the Forest Supervisor issues a final decision.
It’s essential for stakeholders to thoroughly review the FEIS and Draft ROD during this 45-day objection period to ensure that all potential environmental impacts and concerns are adequately addressed. This process allows for a comprehensive assessment of the project’s potential effects on the surrounding ecosystem and community, highlighting the importance of public engagement in decision-making processes related to significant development projects.
