The United States women’s gymnastics team secured a gold medal in the team final on Tuesday, sparking a celebratory atmosphere among the group when Simone Biles received a score of 14.666 on her floor routine in Paris.
Following the victory, Team USA unveiled a new nickname, a tradition seen in previous gold-winning teams. This year’s moniker, however, stands out from the rest and was disclosed by Biles after the competition at the Paris Olympics.
Team Nicknames Through the Years
During the London 2012 Games, the championship team was known as the Fierce Five. In 2016 in Rio, they became the Final Five, followed by the Fighting Four in Tokyo.
Aly Raisman, a gold medalist and member of the 2012 and 2016 Olympic teams, inquired about this year’s team name during a post-competition press conference.
Biles initially teased with, “I’m not going to say it,” creating more anticipation.
With some deliberation, Biles finally revealed the name after input from Jordan Chiles and Suni Lee.
“F around and find out,” Biles stated, eliciting laughter from the audience.
The nickname aptly reflects the team’s relentless spirit.
Individual Performances Spark Victory
Notably, Biles’ 14.666 floor routine wasn’t her top performance. She excelled with a 14.900 in the vault. Additionally, vault specialist Jade Carey and Chiles scored 14.800 and 14.400, respectively, in that event.
Other standout moments included Lee’s impressive uneven bars and balance beam routines, while Biles and Chiles shined with scores of 14.400 and 14.366 on the uneven bars.
As a team, the U.S. concluded with a total score of 171.296, a significant lead over silver medalist Italy at 165.494 and third-place Brazil at 164.497.
