Zakia Wardak, the senior-most Afghan diplomat in India, has recently resigned from her position following an incident at Mumbai airport where she was reportedly caught trying to smuggle 25 kg of gold worth Rs 18.6 crore from Dubai. Wardak had been serving as the acting ambassador of Afghanistan to New Delhi, taking over the role late last year after working as the Afghan Consul General in Mumbai for over two years.

Resignation Statement and Background

In a statement posted on ‘X’, Wardak mentioned that she decided to resign due to the numerous personal attacks she had been facing, which severely impacted her ability to effectively carry out her duties. She did not directly address the reports of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seizing gold from her at the Mumbai airport on April 25, where she was not arrested due to her diplomatic immunity.

Wardak expressed regret over the decision to step away from her role at the consulate and embassy of Afghanistan in India effective May 5. She cited the personal attacks and defamation aimed not only at her but also at her family and extended relatives, which had taken a toll on her ability to operate effectively.

Challenges Faced by Women in Afghan Society

The Afghan diplomat highlighted the challenges faced by women in Afghan society who are striving to modernize and bring positive change amidst ongoing propaganda campaigns. Wardak noted that the persistent and coordinated nature of the attacks on her character had surpassed a tolerable threshold.

She emphasized that the public narrative unfairly targeted her as the only female representative within the system, rather than focusing on constructive assistance and support. Wardak mentioned that while it was her passion to serve her country and contribute to positive change, she needed to prioritize her well-being and ability to function effectively in her role, leading to her difficult decision to resign.

Gratitude to India

In her resignation statement, Wardak also expressed gratitude to India for its unwavering support during her tenure in the country. She acknowledged the collaborative efforts and shared vision for progress between nations, emphasizing the privilege she felt working alongside the people of India for the past three years.

Insight:

The incident involving Zakia Wardak sheds light on the challenges faced by women in public roles, especially in male-dominated societies like Afghanistan. The personal attacks and defamation she experienced highlight the need for greater support and empowerment of women leaders in such environments. Additionally, the case brings attention to the issue of smuggling and corruption, emphasizing the importance of upholding integrity and transparency in diplomatic relations.
