Customs officers at Chennai airport have been busy seizing a significant amount of gold in the past few days. The total value of the seized gold amounts to Rs 1.67 crore.
Monday’s Seizure
On Monday, the air intelligence unit of the customs department intercepted a flyer arriving from Malaysia. During the inspection, they discovered a gold chain and a gold bangle of 22 karat quality, with a total weight of around 710 grams and an estimated worth of Rs 44.53 lakh.
Tuesday’s Seizures
The following day, a female passenger was intercepted, and 900 grams of 24 karat quality gold in the form of two gold chains were seized. Both passengers were subsequently arrested and released on bail.
Gold Paste Concealed in Abandoned Bag
Additionally, on Tuesday, an Air Arabia employee discovered an abandoned bag on a flight arriving from Abu Dhabi. Upon inspection, the bag was found to contain four pouches with gold in paste form concealed within them. The paste yielded 1.06 kg of gold ingot, valued at Rs 66.23 lakh. Investigations are currently underway to identify the carrier of the abandoned bag.
