The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are on the hunt for four individuals who robbed a man at a gas station in Chamberlain, Saskatchewan, after attempting to sell him “gold or other items.” The incident took place at around 10 p.m. CST on Thursday, with the victim being coerced into withdrawing cash from an ATM and then threatened before having his money stolen. The suspects fled the scene in a grey or silver Dodge Durango, leaving the victim unharmed.
‘Gold scam’ very common: Regina pawnshop
Authorities have highlighted similarities between this incident and a prevalent “gold scam” that has been reported across North America, including a recent case in Winnipeg. Kristina Jankowski, co-owner of Cash Avenue Pawn in Regina, shared that the pawnshop frequently encounters individuals who have fallen victim to such scams. According to Jankowski, these scams are a regular occurrence, with individuals often unwittingly attempting to pawn off fake gold items that resemble authentic pieces.
Jankowski noted that the warmer months tend to see a rise in these scams due to increased outdoor activities and social interactions, making individuals more susceptible to being targeted. Many victims are approached under the guise of needing help with gas money or other emergencies and are offered fake gold in exchange for financial assistance.
She emphasized that the victims of these scams are often older individuals, but the store has seen a diverse range of people who have been duped. Despite losing significant amounts of money, victims often believe they are getting a good deal, only to realize later that they have been deceived with polished brass disguised as gold.
When confronted with fake gold brought in by scam victims, Cash Avenue Pawn spreads awareness through word of mouth and social media to caution others. Jankowski advises the public to remain vigilant and skeptical when approached by individuals offering valuable items in exchange for help.
Adding to the commentary about the prevalent “gold scam” issue, it is crucial for individuals to be cautious and discerning when approached by strangers offering valuable items. Scammers often prey on people’s goodwill and eagerness to help, leading to financial losses and emotional distress. By raising awareness about these scams and encouraging a healthy dose of skepticism, communities can protect themselves from falling victim to such fraudulent schemes.
