Pitt Panthers Spring Game at Acrisure Stadium
The Pitt Panthers wrapped up their spring season with the Spring Game held at Acrisure Stadium, where the Gold Team emerged victorious with a 17-10 win over the Blue Team.
Strong Start by Gold Team
The Gold Team got off to a strong start on the first drive, as redshirt freshman place kicker Sam Carpenter successfully kicked a 44-yard field goal. Alabama transfer and redshirt freshman quarterback Eli Holstein also made a significant contribution by completing 3-of-8 passes for 40 yards on the drive.
Defensive Stand by Gold Team
The Gold Team’s defense proved to be a force to reckon with, as fifth-year defensive end Dayon Hayes forced a fumble by redshirt freshman wide receiver Zion Fowler-El, leading to a substantial loss for the Blue Team. Additionally, redshirt junior Elliot Donald and freshman linebacker Jeremiah Marcelin made impressive sacks on the drive, forcing a punt.
Key Plays and Turnovers
Holstein showcased resilience on the field, despite a streak of nine straight incompletions, as he orchestrated a stellar final drive. His seven completions out of 10 passes for 91 yards culminated in a six-yard touchdown pass to sixth-year running back Daniel Carter, giving the Gold Team a 10-3 lead at halftime. Furthermore, redshirt freshman Ty Dieffenbach capitalized on the momentum by throwing an 18-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Johnson, extending the Gold Team’s lead to 17-3.
Blue Team’s Fight Back
Although the Blue Team faced a deficit, they did not back down. Redshirt junior Nate Yarnell stepped in for struggling redshirt junior Christian Veilleux and delivered a pinpoint pass to redshirt freshman wide reciever Lamar Seymore, resulting in a touchdown that narrowed the lead to 17-10 by the end of the third quarter.
Closing Moments
With freshman quarterback Julian Duggar taking the reins for the Blue Team, their efforts fell short as they turned the ball over on downs, ultimately securing the win for the Gold Team.
Insight:
The Spring Game provided valuable experience for both new and returning players as they showcased their skills and potential contributions to the team.
