Arrests Expected in $22 Million Gold and Cash Theft
Peel Regional Police and the U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Bureau are set to announce arrests related to the theft of approximately $20 million in gold and nearly $2 million US in cash from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. The announcement is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. ET in Brampton, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the incident.
CBC News will be covering the announcement live, where details and arrests tied to the theft will be disclosed as part of Project 24K, a joint-task investigation into the high-value crime.
Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah, Det-Sgt. Mike Mavity, and Eric DeGree, the special agent in charge of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Bureau, will be speaking at the event.
Despite the time gap since the initial incident, law enforcement officials have assured that they have been actively working to locate and apprehend those responsible for the theft.
Brink’s Legal Action Against Air Canada
On another front, Brink’s, a security company based in Miami, is filing a lawsuit against Air Canada for allegedly allowing an unauthorized individual to steal gold bars and cash from their facility at Pearson Airport.
According to court documents obtained by CBC News, Brink’s was tasked with transporting more than 400 kilograms of gold and close to $2 million US dollars from Zurich to Toronto on behalf of two Swiss banks.
The valuables arrived safely at Pearson Airport on April 17, 2023, and were placed in an Air Canada storage facility. However, a lapse in security measures led to an unidentified individual gaining access to the facility and walking away with the valuable cargo.
Brink’s alleges that the individual presented a fraudulent waybill to Air Canada personnel, who failed to verify its authenticity, leading to the unauthorized release of the gold and cash.
