Former Olympic champion László Csongrádi is going to great lengths to retrieve his stolen gold medal.
The 1988 Summer Olympics sabre champion woke up on September 10th to find his prized possession missing. In a surprising turn of events, he is now offering to bequeath the medal to the thief in his will if it is returned.
Csongrádi shared his anguish over the situation, stating, “For two weeks, I can’t calm down and be happy, because everything reminds me of my stolen Olympic gold medal.” He expressed his willingness to give up everything to the culprit in exchange for the return of the seemingly worthless object. Csongrádi even offered to leave the medal to the thief in his will instead of to a museum.
Details of the Crime
Recounting the incident, Csongrádi explained that he was asleep when the thief broke into his home and took the precious medal. He had kept it securely hidden in a cupboard, wrapped multiple times to keep it out of sight.
Despite the thief’s thorough search through drawers and doors, they only left when Csongrádi raised his voice. Expressing his confusion over the thief’s motives, Csongrádi remarked, “I don’t know what you can do with something that’s a simple metal coating, so it’s not worth much in these markets. I just want my gold medal back.”
The Search for the Medal
The news of the theft was initially revealed by Tamás Kovács, the former national team captain of the fencing team, on his Facebook page. He urged his followers to share the information in hopes of reaching collectors or market vendors who may come across the stolen medal.
Csongrádi, who won the gold medal in the team sabre competition at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, alongside György Nébald, Bence Szabó, Imre Bujdosó, and Imre Gedővári, is deeply attached to the significance of the medal.
