Theft of Bronze Age Treasures Prompts Crimestoppers Reward
The charity Crimestoppers is offering a £5,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of thieves who stole two Bronze Age treasures from Ely Museum in Cambridgeshire on 7 May. The stolen items include a 3,000-year-old gold torc and a bracelet, both of which were found in Cambridgeshire by metal detectorists.
Reward for Information
The torc, valued at £220,000 and acquired by the museum in 2017 through grants and donations, is considered one of the best Bronze Age finds in England in over a century. Made of almost pure gold and weighing 730g (1lb 10oz), the torc is larger than many other examples found in the country.
Additional Insight:
The theft of ancient artifacts not only robs communities of their cultural heritage but also deprives future generations of the opportunity to learn about the past through tangible objects. The reward offered by Crimestoppers is a crucial step in encouraging individuals to come forward with information that could lead to the recovery of these priceless treasures.
Appeal for Assistance
Annabelle Goodenough, the South East regional manager at Crimestoppers, emphasized the importance of returning these historic treasures, describing them as “totally irreplaceable” and a significant part of Cambridgeshire’s history. She urged the public to provide any information that could help bring the thieves to justice and lead to the safe return of the stolen items to the museum.
Museum Curator’s Response
Elie Hughes, curator of Ely Museum, expressed devastation over the loss of the torc and the bracelet, referring to them as “culturally significant objects” that cannot be replaced. The museum had received overwhelming community support when acquiring the torc in 2017, making the theft an even greater loss.
Anonymity Guaranteed
Crimestoppers stated that the £5,000 reward would be available for three months, ending on 30 August. The organization assured that anyone providing information leading to the recovery of the stolen treasures would remain anonymous. This measure aims to encourage individuals with knowledge of the theft to come forward without fear of reprisal.
Theft Alert
The theft of such ancient artifacts serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting cultural heritage. The offer of a reward by Crimestoppers underscores the collective efforts needed to safeguard historical treasures and hold accountable those responsible for their theft.
