On Tuesday, Major League Baseball announced the finalists for the 2024 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards. Among the finalists is Mets starting pitcher Luis Severino.
Expected Finalists and Surprises
Francisco Lindor, who has been in serious MVP discussions due to his stellar defense, was expected to be a finalist for the Mets. However, the National League finalists for shortstop ended up being Dansby Swanson (Cubs), Ezequiel Tovar (Rockies), and Masyn Winn (Cardinals).
Severino’s Rivals
Severino will be competing against National League East rivals Zack Wheeler (Phillies) and Chris Sale (Braves) for the Gold Glove award.
Insight on Gold Gloves
Gold Gloves, especially for pitchers, are often subjective. This season, Severino had a significant increase in opportunities to make plays on the batted ball, as shown by his career highs in chances, put outs, assists, and errors.
Historical Perspective
It’s worth noting that Juan Lagares was the last Met to win a Gold Glove in 2014, while the last Mets starting pitcher to receive the award was Ron Darling in 1989, who is now a Mets broadcaster.
Upcoming Announcement
The winners of the 2024 Gold Glove Awards will be announced on November 3rd during an episode of ESPN’s Baseball Tonight.
