Gold Mine Collapse in Nigeria Leaves Dozens Trapped
Rescuers are in a race against time to find dozens of workers who were trapped when a gold mine collapsed in northcentral Nigeria, authorities and residents revealed.
Tragedy Strikes in Niger State
The devastating incident occurred on Monday in Niger state’s remote Shiroro district, following heavy rains that caused the soil to weaken. Although state emergency services confirmed one fatality, reports suggest that as many as 44 workers are still missing.
Challenges Faced in Rescue Efforts
The rescue mission has been fraught with challenges, with the deep pit making it difficult for excavators to reach the trapped workers. Abdullahi Arah, head of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, described how responders had to flee as the mine continued to collapse.
According to Ibrahim Hussaini, spokesperson for emergency services, expanding the pit to locate the workers has proven to be a daunting task. He highlighted the difficulty of maneuvering heavy machinery effectively in such precarious conditions.
Awaiting Hopeful News
As rescue operations resumed, distraught families anxiously observed the efforts to clear the debris. One of the trapped workers, Yakubu Galkogo, had just started his job on the day of the collapse. His brother, Auwal Suleiman, expressed the deep concern felt by Galkogo’s wife and children.
Suleiman appealed to the government for increased assistance in the rescue mission, stressing the tense atmosphere permeating the area.

Northern Nigeria boasts rich mineral deposits, but the region often grapples with issues of corruption, illegal mining operations, and poor working conditions. The remote locations of these mineral reserves, coupled with inadequate governmental oversight, contribute to the prevalence of such challenges in the mining sector.
