A mining company is exploring the repurposing of a shuttered gold mine in Nova Scotia for a hydro energy storage system and solar farm. The subsidiary of Australia-based mining company St Barbara, Atlantic Mining, recently ceased operations at the Touquoy gold mine in Moose River and is now collaborating with Halifax-based renewable energy firm Natural Forces for a feasibility study into a “renewable energy hub.”
Energy Storage System
The proposed system would utilize the open pits of the mine for a closed-loop pumped hydro energy storage system. This system uses water in elevated reservoirs as a natural battery to store excess energy during low demand periods and release it during high demand times.
This innovative approach to repurposing the mine offers a sustainable solution that leverages existing infrastructure for renewable energy generation.
Solar Energy Project
In addition to the hydro storage system, the feasibility study will assess the viability of constructing a solar energy project on the mine’s waste rock pile. This project would contribute clean energy to the provincial grid.
Integrating solar power with the hydro energy storage system enhances the overall sustainability and resilience of the proposed renewable energy hub.
Land Reclamation and Sustainability
Andrew Strelein, CEO of Atlantic Mining, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable development and responsible land use. The project aligns with the mine’s reclamation requirements post-closure.
Including land reclamation considerations in the feasibility study demonstrates a holistic approach to environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability.
Environmental Concerns
While the project showcases innovation in greening the electric grid, there are concerns about Atlantic Mining’s environmental track record. The company faced penalties for breaching environmental laws related to its previous mining operations in Nova Scotia.
Addressing these environmental concerns and ensuring transparency in project planning are crucial for building trust and credibility in the community.
Revised Plans for Fifteen Mile Stream Project
Atlantic Mining’s change in plans to shift all operations to the Fifteen Mile Stream project underscores the evolving nature of the mining industry and the company’s responsiveness to environmental considerations.
The shift in focus highlights the importance of adaptability and strategic planning in the transition towards more sustainable mining practices.
