Rapper Megan Thee Stallion took on the role of host at the MTV Video Music Awards with charisma and energy on Wednesday night.
The 29-year-old started the evening in a one-shoulder leotard, reminiscent of an outfit an Olympic gymnast might wear. Megan humorously mentioned gold medalist Simone Biles from Houston and claimed she borrowed the outfit with a few modifications, stating, “I deserve a gold medal for being a bad bitch.”
The VMAs dedicated the night to celebrating 40 years of the show by revisiting significant moments from the past. Megan paid tribute herself by appearing with a live snake as a nod to Britney Spears’ iconic 2001 performance, even donning Spears’ memorable outfit.
After a brief moment with the snake, Megan humorously called for the music to stop and the removal of the snake, jokingly stating, “I’m just playing. Come get this snake.” She added, “I tried to hold it down for Britney,” as handlers took the snake away.
Megan’s performance showcased a medley of songs including “BOA,” “B.A.S,” and “Hiss.” She also performed her recent hit single, “Mamushi,” from her latest album, featuring Japanese rapper Yuki Chiba. Introducing Yuki mid-song, Megan exclaimed, “All the way from Japan for the first time, Yuki!”
In another costume change of the night, Megan took the stage in the Gladiator II-inspired outfit from a recent Pepsi ad. This campaign, featuring Megan and football stars Josh Allen, Derrick Henry, and Justin Jefferson, blends music, sports, and entertainment.
The Gladiator-themed ad follows the iconic 2004 Super Bowl commercial, Roman Empire, starring Beyoncé, Spears, and Pink.
