Germany’s Lukas Maertens claimed the first swimming medal of the 2024 Paris Olympics by winning the men’s 400-meter freestyle on Saturday.
Maertens, who was on track to break a world record at one point during the race, faltered slightly in his final turn but managed to finish strong and secure the gold medal.
Competition Results
Australia’s Elijah Winnington finished closely behind Maertens to clinch the silver medal, while South Korea’s Kim Woomin earned the bronze.
Maertens aimed to beat his compatriot Paul Biedermann’s world record time of 3:40.07 set in 2009 but ultimately finished with a time of 3:41.78. Winnington and Woomin followed closely with times of 3:42.21 and 3:42.50, respectively.
Insight into Maertens’ Olympic Journey
This victory marks just the beginning of Maertens’ Olympic campaign. He is set to compete in the 200-meter freestyle and 200-meter backstroke events for Germany as well.
While Maertens did not secure a medal in the 2021 Tokyo Games, he previously claimed gold in the same event at the 2022 European Championships. Despite earning bronze in both the 2023 and 2024 world championships, Maertens has shown his ability to rise to the occasion on the Olympic stage.
