Elderly Man Scammed Out of Gold Bars Worth $688,000
In a recent incident, a 69-year-old self-employed man in Kyoto fell victim to a scam in which he was defrauded of gold bars worth approximately ¥100 million ($688,000).
Elaborate Scam Operation
The scam began when the man received a call from someone posing as a representative from a mobile phone company, claiming that his phone service would be cut off. Subsequently, the victim was contacted by individuals claiming to be police officers and prosecutors, who convinced him that he was facing a warrant for financial fraud. This elaborate ruse included sending fake police IDs and arrest warrants to further deceive the victim.
Stolen Assets
Under the guise of proving his innocence, the victim was instructed to place 7.4 kilograms of gold bars in a bag at his doorstep, which was then stolen. Additionally, he was duped into leaving ¥6.7 million in cash at a nearby park, which was also taken.
Similar Scam in the Area
Notably, a similar scam occurred in June in which a 73-year-old woman in Kyoto was defrauded of gold bars worth about ¥52 million. This case led to the arrest of two individuals on suspicion of attempting to defraud more gold from the same victim.
Additional Insight
Scammers often target vulnerable individuals, especially the elderly, by using elaborate schemes that play on their fears and vulnerabilities. It is important for people to be vigilant and cautious when receiving unsolicited calls or messages, especially those requesting personal information or financial assets.
