KANNUR: A group of MGNREGS workers were in for a pleasant surprise while digging rainwater harvesting pits in a rubber plantation in Kerala’s Kannur district. They unearthed a mud pot containing a treasure trove of gold and silver coins and ornaments. This unexpected discovery took place near Parippai Govt LP School in Chemagai panchayat.
Initial Discovery and Investigation
The laborers stumbled upon the mud pot and initially mistook it for a bomb, causing them to fear an explosion. However, when the container burst open, it revealed 17 pearl beads, 13 gold medallions, four traditional ‘kashumala’ medallions, a pair of earrings, and silver coins. Ashitha, one of the workers, expressed surprise at the find and immediately informed the panchayat president. Authorities were quickly notified, and the items were handed over to the Taliparamba Police.
Further Finds and Potential Historical Significance
Upon further examination, five additional silver coins and two gold ornaments were discovered at the same location the following day. The archaeology department confirmed that these antiques dated back around 200 years. While the area does not hold any historical significance, the department plans to conduct a detailed investigation to determine if there is a larger treasure trove hidden in the vicinity. The authenticity of the recovered items will also be verified by the department.
Insight into Uncovering History
Unearthing such treasures not only adds an element of surprise and awe to the daily work of the MGNREGS workers but also sheds light on the rich history and cultural heritage of the region.
