Golden Days Celebration in Fairbanks
One hundred and twenty-two years after Felix Pedro discovered gold in the hills north of Fairbanks, the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the anniversary of that discovery with old-time games, a parade, street fair, and the racing of 8,000 rubber duckies. The theme for this year’s Golden Days is “A Tale as Gold as Time.”
Celebrating History and Community
Elora Swan-Song, chamber events coordinator, called Golden Days an opportunity for Fairbanksans to come together, take pride in the community, and reflect on Fairbanks’ history. Golden Days is known for having the biggest parade and street fair in Alaska. The event is a way for residents to celebrate their heritage and connect with one another.
Events and Activities
The week-long celebration includes various activities such as the Old Tyme Games, where families can participate in old-fashioned games like pie eating, watermelon eating, balloon toss, and an egg and spoon race. There is also a Grande Parade featuring 70 entrants, food and craft vendors, live entertainment, and the highlight of the event, the rubber duck race.
Enhancing Fairbanks’ Heritage
Katie J. Ringsmuth, state historian and deputy of the Alaska State Historic Preservation Office, will be speaking on strategies to enhance Fairbanks’ heritage for tourism during the Chamber’s Golden Days-themed business luncheon. This provides insight into how communities can leverage their history for economic development and cultural preservation.
Felix Pedro Monument Rededication
In addition to the festive activities, the Pioneers of Alaska, Fairbanks Igloo No. 4, and Women’s Igloo No. 8 are hosting a rededication ceremony at the Felix Pedro Monument, where attendees can learn more about the contributions of Mary Doran Pedro, the wife of Felix Pedro.
