Fire on I-80 Shuts Down Traffic
Update 2:03 p.m.
CAL FIRE is currently performing air attacks to keep the fire under control, and I-80 remains closed between Colfax and SR-20 with no estimated time of re-opening.
Electric Semi-Truck Fire Causes Closure
An electric semi-truck fire near Nyack has shut down a portion of I-80, leading to traffic disruptions in the area.
Cars heading west are being turned around at the Nevada state line, while eastbound traffic is being diverted at Applegate. Traffic is being detoured to SR 20.
Alternative Routes for Semi-Trucks
Semi-trucks can use northbound U.S. 395 to westbound CA State Route 70 as an alternate route to bypass the closure on I-80.
Challenges Faced in Managing the Fire
The California Highway Patrol reported that no injuries occurred in the crash, but due to toxic fumes emitted by the batteries in the truck, people had to be kept a mile back from the crash until the fire was extinguished.
Moreover, battery fires are particularly challenging to put out, requiring either a special dry chemical or a large amount of water, like 40,000 gallons, to extinguish.
Collaborative Efforts to Address the Incident
Authorities from Nevada and California are working closely to address and mitigate the impacts of the I-80 closures caused by the incident involving the electric semi-truck fire near Nyack.
