For a price of $187,000, you have the opportunity to own a pocket watch that once belonged to one of the wealthiest Titanic victims.
Details of the Auction
The 14-carat gold Waltham timepiece engraved with “JJA” belonged to business magnate John Jacob Astor IV and is set to be auctioned this weekend at Henry Aldridge & Son in Britain.
John Jacob Astor IV, who was known for his real estate ventures, tragically perished in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. His body was found a week after the disaster, and the pocket watch was recovered from his person.
Significance of the Watch
The starting bid for this historic watch is £60,000, approximately $75,000, but experts anticipate it could sell for as high as £150,000 ($187,320).
Aside from its monetary value, the watch holds sentimental value as one of the items that helped identify Astor’s body, along with the initials on his jacket.
Personal Items of Astor
In addition to the watch, Astor was also found with other valuable possessions, including a gold watch, gold and diamond cufflinks, and a diamond ring with three stones. His pockets contained $2,720 in cash, as well as gold, silver, and franc.
The watch has a unique history as it was restored and worn by Astor’s son before being returned to the family. This connection adds to its importance as a piece of maritime history related to the Titanic.
Legacy of the Titanic
John Jacob Astor IV was among the 1,500 passengers who lost their lives in the Titanic tragedy. His possessions, including the pocket watch, have been displayed in various museums, allowing people to connect with the history of this infamous shipwreck.
Other Auctions and Titanic Memorabilia
The sale of the pocket watch is part of a trend of Titanic-related items going up for auction, such as a letter from a fortunate survivor and the controversial door from the film “Titanic” selling for a substantial amount.
