A 45-year-old man is facing theft charges after being arrested by Laval police in the wake of an investigation that began last August.
Alain Bernecky faces two counts of theft of more than $5,000 and was arrested on Oct. 2. He is suspected by police of having committed thefts in jewelry stores in the Montreal area, the Eastern Townships, and the Centre-de-Québec region.
Bernecky came to the notice of Laval police last summer after a man entered a local jewelry store, asked to see a selection of gold chains, and then grabbed what was shown to him and ran. Police said the 20 or so chains stolen in that incident were valued at $800 to $1,000 each.
Investigators allege that Bernecky committed another theft in Laval soon after that incident, and their subsequent investigation determined he was involved in six thefts between July and September that saw nearly $100,000 worth of jewelry stolen.
Bernecky remains in custody pending his next court appearance on Oct. 28.
Anyone with any information that could further the investigation is urged to call the Laval police tip line at 450-662-4636 or call 911 and mention file LVL 240812-045.
Insight into Jewelry Store Thefts
It is not uncommon for jewelry stores to be targeted by thieves due to the high value and small size of items, making them easy to steal and transport. Thieves often target gold chains and other valuable pieces that can be quickly resold for a profit. Jewelry store owners should take precautions such as installing security cameras, utilizing safes, and training staff to be vigilant to prevent such thefts.
