Gabby Thomas contributed to the U.S. taking the lead in gold medals over China at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday with a remarkable performance in the women’s 200-meter final. She achieved victory with a finishing time of 21.83, outpacing St. Lucia’s Julien Alfred and U.S. teammate Brittany Brown.
Upon realizing that she had secured her first Olympic gold, Thomas’s focus turned to the American flag.
Thomas expressed, “There is nothing like getting that flag after you cross the line and you see the coach right there with it and everybody’s going crazy and America’s watching, it’s just such an amazing moment,” during a video interview with local Atlanta station 11 Alive.
After completing the sprint, Thomas shared in an interview with Vogue, “I was so focused and tunnel-visioned on what I was doing, I blocked out everything else. And just coming back into reality, seeing the photographers everywhere, getting the flag – yes, it was disorienting!”
Reflecting on the Victory
Thomas, with the American flag draped around her, marked her Olympic gold success by ringing the bell, describing the experience as unforgettable and underscoring the realization of her achievement.
America’s Rising Star
As a true American, Thomas’ journey from Atlanta to Harvard and then to Texas for her education has been filled with remarkable accomplishments. Her master’s degree in epidemiology demonstrates her commitment to excellence beyond the track.
During her time at Harvard, Thomas showcased her prowess by securing 22 conference titles in six different track events and making history as the first NCAA sprint champion in Ivy League history, setting a record time of 22.38 seconds in the 200-meter race.
Continuing Excellence
Although Thomas had previously won bronze and silver at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, her outstanding performance in the 200-meter race at the U.S. Olympic Trials semifinals in June signaled a new level of competition for her. Her victory in the women’s 200-meter final in Paris solidified her reputation as a dominant force in track and field.
With her gold medal, Thomas contributes to the U.S.’s track and field success, marking one of five gold medals and 16 total medals for the country. The U.S. currently holds a lead over China with 25 gold medals to 24 at the time of publication.
