LBMA Reviewing Allegations Involving Antam
The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) announced that it is currently reviewing allegations involving Indonesian state miner Aneka Tambang (Antam) regarding the purity of its gold products.
Allegations Against Former General Managers
According to Indonesia’s Attorney General Office, six former general managers at Antam’s Precious Metal Processing and Refining Business Unit have been named as suspects for allegedly misusing Antam’s stamping service. The investigators have revealed that these suspects oversaw the production of approximately 109 tons of gold through this alleged illegal practice from 2010 to 2021. However, the origin of the gold and its distribution after stamping have not been disclosed.
Antam Denies Allegations
In response to the allegations, Aneka Tambang denied that there were 109 tons of counterfeit Antam gold circulating in the community during the period of 2010-2021. The miner stated that all of its precious metal gold products are derived with official certificates and processed at the only gold processing and refining plant in Indonesia certified by the LBMA.
LBMA’s Incident Review Process
LBMA, which sets rules for gold refineries including responsible sourcing requirements, has initiated an Incident Review Process (IRP) in light of the allegations involving Antam.
