Peel Regional Police in Canada recently announced that nine individuals are facing charges in connection with what is being dubbed as the largest gold theft in Canadian history. Last year, 6,600 gold bars worth over 20 million Canadian dollars were stolen from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
The stolen gold bars, weighing a total of 419 kilograms (923 pounds), were melted down and used to purchase illegal firearms. Among those charged are an Air Canada warehouse employee, a former Air Canada manager, and a jewelry store owner.
Insight into the Investigation
Peel Regional Detective Sgt. Mike Mavity revealed that the gold bars and foreign currency were stolen from a haul of an Air Canada flight that arrived from Zurich, Switzerland. The suspects used fraudulent bills at the airline’s cargo warehouse, and some suspects were known to police while others were not.
Arrests and Recovered Assets
Several individuals, including the Air Canada employee, the jewelry store owner, and other suspects, have been arrested in connection with the heist. However, only a small fraction of the stolen money has been recovered so far.
International Smuggling Operation
The investigation also led to the arrest of a truck driver in the U.S., who was found in possession of firearms and involved in trafficking-related activities. The cooperation between U.S. and Canadian authorities helped dismantle an international gun trafficking operation.
Overall, the case highlights the elaborate nature of the gold theft and the subsequent involvement in illegal activities by the perpetrators.
