Cal Poly Wind Band Spring Concert
The Cal Poly Wind Band will be concluding the spring quarter with a concert titled “All Hail, Green and Gold!” at the Performing Arts Center on June 2 at 3 p.m. The concert, named after Cal Poly’s alma mater, will feature performances from the Cal Poly Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, along with the Alumni Symphonic Band.
The Return of Alumni Performers
The Alumni Symphonic Band, first assembled in 2016 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Cal Poly Band, will feature 105 Cal Poly graduates dating back to the class of 1959. Director of Bands Christopher J. Woodruff expressed excitement for the return of the alumni performers, highlighting the continuity of their love for music and the evolution of Cal Poly’s musical heritage.
Student Involvement and Selection of Pieces
In line with Cal Poly’s “Learn by doing” motto, Woodruff emphasized that student instrumentalists’ control over the performance and the pieces selected will showcase the culmination of over nine weeks of hard work and preparation. The selection of American composer David Maslanka’s “A Child’s Garden of Dreams” by the Wind Ensemble not only challenges the musicians but also signifies their growth and artistic exploration.
Exploring Musical Phrasing
The intricate nature of the chosen musical piece demands a deep understanding of musical phrasing, encouraging the wind ensemble musicians to explore different techniques and interpretations. Woodruff’s emphasis on the importance of convincingly presenting challenging pieces to the musicians underscores the dedication and commitment of both the students and the conductor to musical excellence.
Engaging with the Performance
For those interested in experiencing the culmination of the Wind Band’s hard work and musical talent, tickets for “All Hail, Green and Gold!” are available for $10 for students and $15 to $20 for general admission at the Performing Arts Center ticket office. Attendees can witness the fusion of tradition and innovation in a celebration of Cal Poly’s rich musical legacy.
