Deadly Shootouts in Papua New Guinea Over Gold Mine Dispute

A series of violent confrontations between rival tribes fighting over a disputed gold mine in Papua New Guinea has resulted in the deaths of at least 30 individuals, as confirmed by police on Monday.

The police commissioner has granted emergency powers to security forces, allowing them to use “lethal force” to quell the ongoing unrest. In addition, measures such as banning alcohol sales and imposing an overnight curfew have been implemented to maintain peace.

Roots of the Conflict

The violence near the Porgera gold mine in the central highlands of Papua New Guinea stemmed from the illegal settlement of Sakar clan members on land owned by the Piande clan back in August. Despite unsuccessful peace negotiations between the tribes, the situation escalated dramatically on Sunday with more than 300 gunshots being fired by tribesmen.

“This deteriorating situation has been caused by illegal miners and settlers who are using violence to terrorise local communities and victimise traditional landowners,” said Police Commissioner David Manning.

The recent influx of automatic weapons has intensified the conflict, demonstrating that tribal conflicts have been aggravated by modern arms.

The Impact and Escalation

The Porgera gold mine, which previously contributed significantly to Papua New Guinea’s export earnings, has faced disruption due to tribal violence and administrative challenges in recent years. The current unrest has led to the closure of essential facilities like schools, hospitals, and government offices, further exacerbating the situation.

Reports indicate that the Canadian-owned mine was forced to halt operations temporarily as the clashes escalated, underscoring the economic repercussions of the violence.

International Attention and Urgent Calls for Peace

Pope Francis, during a recent visit to Papua New Guinea, urged an end to the violent spiral and emphasized the need for tribal conflicts to cease. The impact of such violence on individuals, peace, and development cannot be overstated, highlighting the urgency for resolution and reconciliation.

Historical Context and Ongoing Efforts

The highlands of Papua New Guinea have witnessed recurrent tribal conflicts, but the recent escalation represents a new level of violence. Past incidents, including a brutal attack in East Sepik province earlier this year and deadly clashes in 2022 near the Porgera mine, underscore the urgent need for sustainable peacekeeping initiatives.

Security measures, such as deploying teams along key routes to the mine and broadcasting messages of peace, are essential steps to mitigate the current crisis and prevent further bloodshed.
